I planned Lima for 3 nights at the end of our month long South American adventure across 3 countries & though initially booked in Miraflores changed my mind to Barranco when i saw pictures of Second Home. Lilian Delfin, the owner mailed me saying they were fully booked but could offer me an apartment(at a little discount) in the main house which we accepted as we love art & really wanted to stay in that beautiful house. We arrived very late around 1am on a rainy, cold Sept night & with great difficulty got the night manager to buzz open the gate. He didn’t speak english & after unlocking a door just indicated that we should follow him down a long curving flight of stairs to the basement where the apartment was located. At night the the place looked huge & dark with lots of windows, there was a sitting room,a dining area,a small kitchen & bedroom. He turned around & left without a word & we were alone exhausted, cold with the sound of the ocean & holwling wind. I peered out to pitch darkness & it did feel a bit eerie. The bedroom was smallish with a kind of a little passage & dusty cupboards which seemed to be used for storage, & a very small bathroom. The room smelt musty & damp & there were some cobwebs & cracks in the wall & ceiling. Anyway after we took a quick hot shower, my DH found a kettle & made some tea to warm me up & we crashed. Next morning before going up for breakfast we tried our best to find a hotel in Miraflores, calling up our earlier choices but to no avail. We went up for breakfast & to talk to the owner about the room. There was no one in the main rooms, after waiting at the table finally a woman who didn’t speak english came to offer us breakfast. Lilian it seems was busy with other guests.
Talent Show And Mixed Feelings. I should have known she was going to get back at. I made faces but hugged Duncan for the heck. When we were almost done she came, greeted us probably saw our grim faces & before i could start with my litany of complaints preempted by sayingthat the apartment was not for everybody & offered us a first floor room looking out into the garden & ocean. We of course jumped at the offer & immediately transferred our things. The house is truly gorgeous with massive colourful canvases everywhere, curios, beautiful garden, pool & stunning sculptures all around but the pi. Barranco is a beautiful part of the city to be enjoyed at leisure, there are a few restaurants a short walk away but not very ideal for people like us with a long list of things to see & places to eat. The traffic in Lima is crazy adding to driving time if you want to go to the centro or the museums or even Miraflores & Larcomar. The restaurants nearby were not too great, infact all the good places to eat were in miraflores & Larcomar mall. Breakfast was served on the lovely patio overlooking the garden as there were such few guests but the meal in itself was hardly adequate, just plain toast with butter/jam,eggs on order,tea/coffee. Fruit was one banana or whole apple. Maybe that too has changed now. We met the artist Victor Delfin on the day we were leaving, the visit itself seemed to be a bit forced, like a meet & greet & all guests are taken there as a mandatory part of the stay. It was nice to meet him but he was very professional as he must have done it a million time. In hindsight though, for people with less time a hotel in mirafloes is more centrally located & the pragmatic thing to do. Although a beautiful location & lovely house i would have willingly swapped it for a cup of hot tea & a welcoming smile on the night we arrived.
